Save a Life MonthView State Proclaimations
Proclamations from around the countrySALF would like to thank Congresswoman Louis Capps, all the State Governors and Municipal leaders who have proclaimed September as "Save A Life Month" and consider this event as part of their state and community emergency preparednesss efforts in conjunction with "National Preparedness Month". As a proud affiliate of the Homeland Security’s Citizen Corps, hundreds of state Governors and city Mayors across the country have already announced their SALF alliance by Proclamation that encourages their citizens to be “Pre-EMS” trained and join a Citizen Corps Council and/or Medical Reserve Corps in their community. Letters from “Mayors to Mayors and Governors” went out requesting help in promoting SALF’s public awareness campaign for the training of people, starting with school children, to be active bystanders equipped with basic life-supporting first aid skills, including CPR, Heimlich maneuver, and the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) to aid during emergencies. As an ally of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and municipal leagues in various states SALF has begun to see support pour in. SALF works close with state and local governments and their local EMS providers to prepare its citizens, especially school children, for life-threatening emergencies. The goal throughout this campaign is to train the masses, starting with our nation’s youth (grades K-12), to respond effectively and safely during medical emergencies, before paramedics arrive. “Save A Life Month” throughout the month of September, runs in conjunction with Homeland Security’s National Preparedness Month, a nationwide effort to encourage Americans to take action and prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools and recognize the heroism of Emergency Medical Service providers who risk their lives to save others. Mayors and Governors have been asked to distribute SALF information, support its mission, create local activities and welcome SALF’s basic life-supporting first aid training into their community, especially to their school classrooms. Since 1993, "Save A Life Month" has been proclaimed nationally by Governors and Mayors, including former Governors Tommy Thompson (WI) (Cabinet Secretary of Health & Human Services) and Tom Ridge (PA) (Cabinet Secretary of Homeland Security), in an effort to encourage citizens to take an active role should they be faced with a life threatening emergency and be trained.
