4th Graders Welcome State Legislator at Life Saving TrainingSubtitleReturn to the Press Release Index Chicago, Illinois - State Representative Mary Flowers, an influential activist for the children in her district (31st), will be in attendance during one of the Save A Life Foundation's in-school, life supporting first aid training sessions at Randolph Elementary School on November 3rd at 11:00 a.m. SALF instructors, who are also local EMS providers, will lead the training sessions, which are co-sponsored by Chicago Public Schools and Ronald McDonald House Charities, both Global and the Chicago and Northwest Indiana Regional branch. These training sessions will focus on four 4th grade classes, teaching them basic life supporting first aid, including CPR and the Heimlich maneuver for infants, children and adults. The one-hour training, taught by an SALF instructor, who also serves as an EMS provider will prepare students for emergencies, by teaching them scene safety, dialing 911, bleed control and how to open an airway. Carol Spizzirri, founded the SALF after her eighteen-year-old daughter tragically died as a result of bystanders not prepared to assist prior to EMS arrival. To prevent, this tragedy from occurring again, she advocated that all bystanders, especially children be prepared to respond in times of emergencies. With the help from Dr. Henry Heimlich (Heimlich maneuver) and the late Dr. Peter Safar (father of CPR), Spizzirri developed age-appropriate LSFA programs that would be later incorporated into schools nationwide to help increase the chances of survival. Utilizing only first responders for instructors, SALF has been responsible for training over a million schoolchildren and adults in skills that help save a life. Where: Randolph Elementary School ###
