Bystander Basics

Bystander Basics Logo

Bystander Basics is a two-hour life supporting first aid (LSFA) course, including one-hour Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), that teaches young adults 13 years and older, basic skills they need to know if confronted with a life-threatening emergency. The curriculum can be a review of what they previously learned with “Save A Life For Kids”, with an additional one-hour hands-on CPR training and introduction to the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), or a stand-alone course in adult language.  The message is basic and repetitive so each student will eventually feel completely comfortable to proactively aiding in an emergency.

Subjects include:
  • Scene Safety
  • Recognizing an emergency
  • Opening an airway
  • Early Heart Attack Care
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for infant, child, and adult
  • Contacting local EMS
  • Control Bleeding
  • Heimlich Maneuver (Abdominal Thrust), for infant, child, and adult
  • Rescue Breathing, for infant, child, and adult
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Introduction to the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator
About the Course

This course enhances all internationally recognized first aid guidelines and provides those who wouldn't necessarily need advanced training, as children, with basic skills needed to maintain the life of the injured or ill until professional help arrives.

Credentials

Individuals with emergency medical credentials teach SALF courses. Most importantly our courses are based on the skills that those emergency medical professionals need performed by the public, prior to their arrival.  SALF Instructors complete a 4-hour teaching skills orientation. Although these professionals are well versed on the practice of each technique they are about to train, they are taught the ability of translating these techniques into laymen's language especially at the elementary and secondary school level. Subsequently, Instructors are required to attend a yearly seminar to share their experiences, express their points of view and learn from keynote speakers within the school and emergency medical community.

Materials

All SALF courses are geared towards keeping training costs low, while being highly effective. Both the Instructor Manuals and student books have been developed to contain consistent and essential information in a simplified format to keep training time and materials at a minimum. Each page of the Instructor Manual reinforces the step-by-step role of the "Bystander" that the student receives from their take home handbook. A student completion card is available at no additional charge.

Outcome Goals:
  • That the student will understand and feel comfortable in the use of each skill if faced by man-made, natural or personal disaster.
  • That the student will understand the role of EMS verses Pre-EMS.
  • That the student will become more civic minded
  • That the student’s actions will increase survival rate among victims through quick and effective intervention, prior to EMS arrival
That there is a clearer understanding of the men and women of EMS and consider EMS a career choice.
